The contemporary kitchen is a favorite among the organized, minimalist set. While you'll notice some similarities to the industrial kitchen in the simple, straight lines and the interesting contrast of materials, each has a distinct puzzle piece that sets it apart making it unique and easily identifiable. While the industrial kitchen often incorporates vintage accents, its modern counterpart is a forward thinker. You'll find finishes like sleek metals, clean woods, lacquer, concrete and marbles with linear veining or no veining. Obvious horizontal and vertical patterns can be seen in furnishings and cabinetry repeated throughout the space. Concealed storage and the minimal use of accessories and countertop items allows the architectural elements and furnishings to shine as functional, interactive art.

The Industrial Kitchen: Set your temperature

My last kitchen post was all about the vintage retro kitchen. This week I want to talk about the Industrial kitchen and you'll find some similarities between the two. Both are flexible styles that can be adapted to any home, from a log cabin to a sleek contemporary beach house. You'll see that the rules of design for both of these styles are loosened up so that the artistic license is broad, allowing the homeowner to really reflect a personal statement. And THAT is why they are my favorite kitchen designs.

But there are some characteristics in the industrial-style kitchen that are easily recognizable. You'll find that an industrial kitchen reflects a sense of order. They are usually quite organized with cleaner surface areas and interesting, sometimes unconventional means of storage to simplify the process of cooking and cleaning. Cabinetry is usually quite simple with little or no ornamentation. Look for finishes like stainless steel, various metals and concrete in both surfaces, cabinets and furnishings. Walls have traditionally been white, repeating the crisp clean style.

Historically an industrial kitchen may have been accused of being cold and institutional, but I hope to show you that it's in your hands. See how you can set the temperature to a crisp cool or heat it up to warm and cozy.

This is a great example. Notice the clean surfaces, very simple cabinetry and stainless steel accents. I like the white brick walls that soften the edges just a tad. The marriage of industrial barstools with the reinterpretation of an early american light fixture is a nice touch. While I can't identify the exact supplier of the stools or light fixture, I can direct you to Industry West who offers a nice selection of industrial seating at a reasonable price. For lighting, my go-to is always Solaria Lighting in Decatur Georgia. They've created a gorgeous lighting line and this particular fixture is offered in a couple of sizes and a variety of finishes. You'll need to contact an interior designer to purchase thru Solaria, but it will be worth it!

Another great example! Notice how organized this space is with under counter shelving, hanging utensil storage and open shelf storage over the range. The glossy white tile really emphasizes the clean reflective qualities of the industrial kitchen and contrasts ever so slightly with the greyed-down white paint on the walls. These light fixtures are especially fun, a great reinterpretation of the big HID warehouse lights. Take a peek at the warm wood table peeking out of the corner of the photo, softening the hard edges of the steel.

Fun! No cabinets, no hidden storage?!?! Probably scares most of us, but look at all of the organization. The introduction of the wicker baskets does a couple of things for me; it offers covered storage for the messy stuff that you don't want to see, but it also softens all of the steel surfaces, making the space feel almost cozy!

This is probably one of my favorites because I am most comfortable in an eclectic space. I prefer to base my designs on a particular style that works for my clients and the room they're creating, and then add contrasting elements to really bring the space to life. This particular kitchen has all of the characteristics of the industrial with it's stainless steel countertops, industrial stools, sleek white cabinets. The antique wood floors and exposed brick walls actually enhance and warm up the space, making it appear to be a loft area. But I love the addition of the gold leaf mirror that looks like it might have been attached to a dressing table at one time, and the greenery in the window and corner. It doesn't take a lot of contrast to make a room dynamic!

This is a nice blended interpretation. The surfaces in this space don't have the typical reflective qualities of most industrial kitchens. The island is quite simple and clean with lighter wood tones and matching contemporary stools. Minimalist contemporary light fixtures are nice as they don't seem to block the view. The hanging utensil storage is such a simple way to hint at the industrial.

I thought this was an interesting take on the style. You can see the introduction of stainless steel elements but only in hints. This designer used a black iron to tell the story Still the cabinets are quite simple, all of the lines are very clean, and the big chunky hood looks like something you'd find in a professional kitchen. I've picked up several of the light fixtures at Scott Antique Market in Atlanta and I know that Barn Light Electric and Rejuvenation always have nice selections of styles and colors as well.

Here's another example of what a little wood can do for the space. I really love the butcher block top on the island. And the metal cabinets are beautifully built, reflecting a real vintage quality to the finish. Makes me wonder if these aren't vintage steel pieces that have been adapted for kitchen use. If you love the vintage steel pieces, check out Twenty Gauge and contact a designer to order these authentic pieces. The steel stools are definitely found items with a very authentic vintage shape. The curvature really is really a nice touch in an otherwise rectilinear space. Check out that light fixture!!!! LOVE!!!

And I had to include this! Everything about this screams Industrial from the light fixtures to the stainless steel cabinet base to the stools. But it's wrapped in warm exposed red brick, vintage wood countertops, shelving and flooring. This space is proof that the industrial kitchen can be cozy!

New Retro and Vintage Kitchens: The Oxymoron Edition

If we could really calculate how much of our time at home is spent in the kitchen I think we'd all be surprised. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks. And that's the bare minimum. Have you ever hosted a party when people didn't crowd into the kitchen? They can't be coaxed out of there with any form of snack tray! And if your home is like mine, you may have a keeping room within the kitchen area. We find ourselves relaxing in the kitchen keeping room far more than we would in the family room or living room. And then there's the open plan whereby the kitchen and family room are, in effect, one large room.

My point is this: If we're spending most of our at-home time in the kitchen area, then that space needs to be representative of who we are, how we live and what we expect it to accomplish for us. There are innumerable kitchen options in finishes, colors, countertops, cabinet styles, appliances and on and on, so there's no reason your kitchen can't be functional while still reflecting personality and attitude.

This week I want to focus on some great ideas for a Retro or Vintage style kitchen. This style is not a rigid traditional style and leaves room for greater artistic license so open your hearts to the unexpected.

This is the dine-in area and keeping room of my own kitchen. We love interesting finishes and mid-century elements and fell in love with this old laminate table and chairs in pale aqua. We added small 1950's accents with aqua lamps and an old clock and then contrasted with more contemporary leather chairs and barstools in dark brown finish. The bar-height counter is concrete with flecks of glass in the same aqua color. Cabinets were hand painted in a Japanese lacquer technique with a very high gloss finish in a subtle Taupe with off-white rubb-off

I love what this homeowner accomplished in a very small apartment-size kitchen. If the old metal cabinets are in decent shape, I would opt to keep them! And a butcher block countertop is always in fashion! The 1950's style refrigerators can be purchased new these days. Check out www.elmirastoveworks.com or www.bigchillfridge.com. If you're a fan of Rachel Ray you'll see Big Chill Fridge used in her studio kitchen.

Open shelving is a very strong vintage component and often the only way to create storage in small spaces. Don't forget to consider faucetry that follows the theme like this farmhouse faucet with porcelain accents.

How much fun is this?!?! Check out that giant farmhouse sink! And who doesn't wish they had the nerve to do red painted cabinetry? Glass cabine doors are a nice touch and with a vintage kitchen, you have permission to keep the shelves a little messy. Black and white checked floors highlight the cabinetry. Introducing the rustic farm table and rush-seated spool chairs is a nice touch and shows that someone put some time and thought into selecting each piece.

Pink!!!!! Ok, that stove may or may not be operational, but even if it doesn't cook, it is comfortably at home in this kitchen. It sets the tone of the space and can be used for storage. OK, we don't all have the bones of an old farmhouse to work with; wide plank painted floors, exposed floor joists in the ceiling above, but we can still create the look. First notice the cabinet finish: white washed with rub-off areas give an immediate sense of age. The central island is an old work table with what appears to be the original rustic wood top. Very creative way to opt out of a traditional fabricated island. Again with the butcher block countertops, farmhouse sink and farm faucets. White gloss subway tiles for the backsplash are a throwback to the 1950's. And notice the mix of open shelving above and even below countertops. The look of that old stove is not out of the question either; take a look at www.aga-ranges.com for cast iron cooking in brightly colored enamel cookers and ranges.

This kitchen has the feel of vintage with a sprinkling of modern. LOVE the black and white parquetry floors and the black subway tile - WITH WHITE CAULK!! The white cabinets are very simple in the vintage-style with open shelving and create a nice visual contrast. But then take a look at that fabulous hood and the almost industrial-style light fixtures. I love contrast whether in color or style and this really works! Another thing to mention is the rustic wood bench. It's always nice to add some warm rustic wood tones in a retro/vintage style space.

I had to show this space because it really captures the essence of the old general store. Copper ceilings, zinc countertops, cup-style cabinet hardware and a vintage stove. It's very important to consider simplicity in cabinet style and design when working with a retro/vintage kitchen. You won't find the elaborate trims and moldings because this style is based on a much simpler lifestyle and time.

This is someone with a great sense of creativity and an appreciation for the unconventional. And it just feels good! The countertop appears to be a big slab of stone! The plate storage looks like a pallet of some sort adapted for wall display. The under counter doors are obviously mismatched pieces of old rustic wood. But get a load of the contemporary molded plastic chairs. Again . . . .I love the contrast. It just works!

Mirror Mirror Everywhere

Whether you're an avid lover of antiques or a streamlined modernist, a touch of antiqued mirror is a great accent. The speckling and striping that are characteristic of true vintage mirrors occur as a result of moisture, cyclical temperature changes, even salts from our bodies when we handle the backing. These days mirrors have much better protective coatings so we don't see the occurence of the beautiful old patinas.

But that over used cliche "everything old is new again" still stands the test of time. Now you can find antiqued mirror in new products from mirrored tiles to headboards. And in many cases you can select the degree of patina to fit your particular taste. It can be overdone so know your limits, but try introducing one piece into your decor and see what happens!

Chalk Dust: Chalkboard Walls Aren't for Grade School Anymore

One of my favorite decorative accents is a chalkboard wall. It's a great way to add a little whimsy and personality and serves as an ever-evolving piece of art. I think they gain character after they've been used and erased over and over and they start to look like the old elementary school chalkboards, but a wet cloth will wash it as clean as new for those who don't like the shabby chic thing. The applications are infinite and they can be fun in any room!

If you remember the garish orange-toned gold bath fixtures of the past, then this post is going to be hard to swallow. Hopefully that dreadful finish will never rear it's ugly head again, but there is definitely a movement toward the gold-tone finishes. Color Trends: The Dynamic Palette

This is my favorite color palette. I love something dynamic in nature that really makes one stop in his or her tracks and take a deep breath. A more intense color palette will add energy and excitement to a space and can put a smile on your face. The options are limitless. The most fun about the dynamic palette is the constant challenge to find new and unique color combinations. Stay tuned this spring to get a look at a master bedroom I'm working on that combines pale lavendar, grey, black and Crimson red with gold and brass metallic finishes.

Often times I look to advertising for inspiration. Ads are meant to grab our attention so they have to be on the edge. I was immediately drawn to this photo shoot. See how amazing the amethyst of the model's dress reacts to the bright tropical aqua of the oncoming truck. I love the introduction of the natural greens in the lower photo and the way the neutral of the buildings and stone/concrete work as a canvas. This entire palette could easily translate into an amazing interior space.

Again with the neutral in the wall paper that serves as a canvas for bright green, black and leopard print. A taste of an animal print in any space will instantly increase it's charisma and energy. And who doesn't love the 60's with all the Mad Men craze? Just so you know, mid-century is not a trend. Sure, Mad Men has brought it to the front stage, but this is an era with amazing design and great color that will prove to be timeless. How fun are these red chairs with Green upholstery and what looks like a chartreuse carpet?!?! Notice the black accent with the buffet and pattered window treatments and I love those white wall sconces! This isn't an easy color combo to achieve but it could be magnificent if done well!

Interior Color Trends: The Tranquil Palette

I don't believe in color trends. A trend is a passing fancy; a contrived style whose goal is to attract the masses for a short period of time. We run out and spend our money on the current fad only to realize that everyone else has done the same thing and we're now a drop in the bucket of mediocrity. If my clients are willing to spend their hard-earned cash on my expertise, then I want to ensure they have spaces that are aesthetically pleasing for years to come.

So, let's use the term "Color Trends" loosely and look at some really great spaces that have successfully achieved wonderful results. This post we'll focus on a tranquil palette that is soothing and peaceful. And you'll be surprised how many ways this can be achieved!

The white-on-white space is a sophisticated way to create a tranquil, relaxing space. But you have to layer your whites; off-white, pure white, even a hint of tans/neutrals so that it doesn't feel institutional. and add punches of any color to relax the eye. I love the unusual marriage of the pink and gold in the pillow and tabletop accessories in this photo.

Now this space achieves the same goal in a very different way. Very calming and yet much more traditional. Formal, yet still casual. Pale blue walls and wonderful white painted trim is yummy with the wide plank painted floors. Add a simple French provincial-style table and the room starts to relax. This is for the bohemian hiding in all of us. Striped walls, alternating paint and wallpaper are so clever. I love the asymmetrical placement of the antique frame. Sets the casual tone of the room. Again, a lot of white but in this case, toned down with a barrage of pastel accessories and even a hint of red to add a little sexy.

Having recently moved to Canada for a couple of years, I'm slowly buying into the tree hugger mindset and learning that it doesn't have to be painful or staggeringly unattractive. The first time we went to the drugstore, I bought a bottle of baby powder, a tube of toothpaste, some Halls cough drops, Ibuprofen and some deodorant. We paid for our purchases and stood there looking at our junk scattered on the countertop. The girl finally asks us if we want a bag and I responded in my most patronizing voice possible that, "Of course I wanted a bag!" Did she expect me to juggle toothpaste and deodorant all the way home? She clicks her cash register a few times and responds, "That will be 5 cents." I nearly threw the nickel at her but I got my bag and headed home bitching all the way.

Well, that was Day 1 and since then we learned that in Canada, the law says that, if you insist on using plastic bags that will either outlive our planet or bankrupt several world economies to recycle, you'll pay for them. It discourages wasteful use of plastic bags and encourages people to arm themselves with eco friendly shopping bags wherever they go.

We quickly fell in love with this practice. In Atlanta, we have a 2-story terrace-style home. that just means that both levels are above ground with the main living spaces on the second floor. It's beautiful curb appeal but you can't get the groceries into the kitchen without climbing the grand sweeping staircase to the front door. Do you know how annoying that is when Kroger sends you home with 30 plastic bags, many of which are already splitting, and quite a few have only one item like a tub of sour cream?!?! Ric and I have been moaning and groaning about it for years. This bringing your own bag thing has been a Godsend! I can take 4 bags to the grocery and pack them full. I can then put them all on my shoulders and make one trip to the kitchen. And did I mention that I walk 5 blocks to and from the grocery?!?!? I can get an entire case of wine in one bag! No more throwing my back out trying to get a box of wine bottles out of the trunk of the car! We have vowed to never fall victim to Kroger or Publix and their plastic bag anarchy again. When we return to the states permanently it will be with our eco-friendly reusable shopping bags in tow.

That whole shopping bag thing made me realize that the United States could make a hugely positive impact on our environment if we just took that one simple step. Canada is a nation of 33,000,000 people, all of which have given up plastic grocery bags. Imagine how much more we Americans, a nation of 300,000,000, could accomplish!

Now, please don't confuse me with The No-Impact Man. I am NOT giving up electricity, laundry detergent or earrings. But these days I am a tad more interested in introducing some products into my life that are functional, kind, and still wickedly stylish.

My favorite new find is from John Fleuvog (see boots upper right corner). He has designed a line of shoes and boots that are Vegan. No kidding. They are completely free of any animal products and are as fabulous as they are kind. Fluevog doesn't do anything cheap so expect to pay $250-$475 for boots and shoes. But for your money you'll get the best quality in footwear that will last a lifetime and turn some heads along the way.

Then there are the fabulous wood sunglasses by www.iwoodecodesign.com. These are a little pricey for someone who buys her $8.99 sunglasses at a truckstop, about $370 per pair, but they are an amazing fashion statement if you're looking for a splurge.

Not everything manufactured to be thoughtful of our environment is outrageously expensive. This outfit from Hemp and Company can be purchased for around $200 and that includes the stripey socks.

And look at these adorable garden markers made with old silver spoons. These are from a company called The S teel Fork and you'll have so much fun browsing their collection of home furnishings and accessories, jewelry and food. How about this green John Deere tractor hood side table for a conversation piece? What a great fit for a rustic cabin!

I'm still pretty fresh on the tree hugging scene but I'm finding that people can be so creative and that's

what intrigues me most. I plan on continuing my exploration and

taking baby steps as I move forward.

Wallcoverings are back! I can't believe

I'm saying that with such enthusiasm. I have never

been a fan of wallcoverings. Unfortunately homeowners

have shown a tendency to over do it in the home. And

while options seemed limitless on the

surface all of the manufacturers were doing

the same thing. The end result was so

boring that beige paint would have been an improvement. I've had my fill of stria, 1 1/2" stripes, the color-washed look, tone-on-tone patterns, roosters, ladybugs and everything in between. And what was the point of a mostly solid color wallpaper?

But I love what's going on with wallcoverings right now. In a return to the glamor days, it's all about large scale pattern, color, contrast, and hints of metallic. In a word, wallpaper has gone bold.

The Stacy Garcia line of wallcoverings (above and left) is one of my favorites. Her color palette is adventurous with oversized graphics often reminiscent of the deco, nouveau and Hollywood regent eras. But the overall effect is quite sophisticated and regal.

The trick to using these papers is to do it sparingly but do it big. In other words, find a place or two in your home where you can make a statement and then say it loudly. But then remember that old cliche "less is more" and fight the urge to take it into the next room, and the next, and the next.

Another line that takes me to my happy place is the Moda line of wallcoverings (left and below) and these have "FUN" written all over them. One has to be a bit more open minded and gutsy for this line but the end result is stunning! These papers are nothing short of works of art so please enjoy them on their own save the photos of kids and dogs for a quiet spot.

Romantic Bedding that says You've Been up to Something

I love linen and cotton bedding. And when my mother reads this post, she will probably have to be committed. My mom has a very close relationship with her iron and ironing board. So much so that her ironing board is always ready for action in its upright position with the iron on deck and a measuring cup full of water for her steamer waiting in the wings. Her addiction is so extreme that she irons every item of clothing that she puts on her body to near perfect dry cleaning quality rigidity. Her jeans have the permanent press mark down the leg and I wouldn't put it past her to press her socks and underwear when no one's looking.

I, on the other hand, view the ironing board as an antiquated torture device that serves no other purpose than to break the spirit of the newly married woman. The best day of my young life was when I realized how much more efficient and cost effective it was to have dress shirts laundered and pressed by the pros. I'm sure that revelation saved my marriage.

I don't iron anything I wear unless it looks like it has been wadded up and stuffed into a Starbucks espresso cup for a week. In spite of that, for years I let my mother's sinister mind games spill into my home decorative decisions. My bedding had to be permanent press, wrinkle-free, stiff, and I never actually slept under the comforter for fear of ruining the finish. The fabric on my chairs was durable and practical. And my window treatments had to have the perfect drape with each fold the exact same width.

Recently I posted this photo (top left) of my new bedroom on Facebook. I'm sure my poor mother nearly choked on her Circus Peanuts when she saw the wrinkles in the bedspread. But she was subtle. She simply posted a comment that said, "What kind of bedspread is that?" Now, any daughter knows what that comment really meant. What she was saying is this:

"Oh my goodness! Look at that awful bedspread. It looks like you left it in the dryer for a week! Well, I would be humiliated if any of my friends saw the way you live. I can't believe you don't have more self respect than to share that photo with anyone, let alone in a public forum! Just wait til your Dad gets home!'

And if I were in the room, I'd get "The Look". But that's a subject for a different time.

Well today I'm publicly declaring that rumpled bedding is the hottest look on the streets. The bedroom is the most intimate space in the home. It should feel cozy, making you want to cuddle up in fluffy fabrics and feel safe. Linen and cotton bedding look and feel casual and I like to compare it to distressed wood furniture. The beauty of wood that is distressed and aged is that new nicks and dents won't jump out at you, ruining the look of the piece. Instead, they actually enhance the character. Well, the inherent nature of linen is to be soft, wrinkled and carefree so you can only enhance it's spontaneity by tossing it askew across the bed letting the folds fall as they will. Linen bedding is sexy and romantic. It teases by hinting that you've been up to something you wouldn't want to tell your mom about!

Take a gander at some of my favorite sources for linen and cotton bedding. In the meantime, I need to call home to soften the blow of this rebellious post!

The first is Matteo at www.matteohome.com. This company does fabulous 100% linen and

cotton duvets, sheeting, blankets, bath products and even some sleepwear. I'm a huge fan of their cotton blankets. Their attention to detail is unmatched, making this line very unique and a bit pricey. A king size duvet cover could run you anywhere from $450-$895 retail.

Rough Linen www.roughlinen.com is another of my favorites. The entire line has a very clean

organic look and feel. The Orkney collection is carefree undyed natural linen. The duvet has button closures with standard white buttons or optional bone buttons in 4 colors. The St. Barts collection is a mix of geometric patterns with color combos including pale blue/natural, yellow/natural, burnt orange/natural, and white/natural. Pricing starts aro

und $175 for a twin duvet up to $410 retail for a king duvet. Decorative throw pillows are very affordable at $35-$45 per pillow.

And then there's Pom Pom at Home at www.pompomathome.com. Pom Pom offers a gorgeous collection of romantic linen bedding and crib bedding at

a lower price. But don't be fooled, this is still luxury bedding. Collections range from simple & sophisticated to more ornate victorian with wonderful embroidery. This line can only be purchased from interior designers or registered retailers but as a comparison price point, a king duvet could run around $225 retail.

I advise everyone to contact an interior designer for purchase of any of the above items. While you can purchase Matteo and Rough Linen online, your designer may be able to offer a nice discount off the retail pricing.

Everything Old is New Again at JQ mid-century modern ATL

By now it's no secret that my personal design

style is far from a purist interpretation of any particular era or trend. In fact, I like to think that my work is more likened to the thrill of an exploding Pinata. Sure, there are certain things you expect. You specified the striped donkey Pinata filled with candy rather than toys or money. It's detailed on your receipt. But the fun is in the anticipation of the variety of chocolates and sour balls . . . and perhaps a surprise squirt gun in the mix. While I don't suggest using Pinatas as decorative elements in most homes, those little surprise squirt guns are indicative of the very secrets to creating dazzling interiors.

One of my favorite "squirt guns" is the mid-century modern designs of the 1940's, 1950's and 1960. I love

the elegant lines, soft curves and interesting angles. This photo is one corner of my living room. It's easy to pinpoint the mid-century pieces: the white leather sofa, the 1940's bar, the whimsical clock. But if you look closer you'll see something interesting happen. An oversized 1960's lamp rests on a Duncan Phyfe-style side table - a style that came to be in the early 1800's. You'll see a wonderful Klysmos-style chair - a style that is notably of ancient Greek decent - that was actually reinterpreted in the 1960's. And if you could see into the opening door you'd see a turn-of-the century Renaissance Revival dining table and chairs.

Mid-century modern pieces have the subtleties to blend with almost any well-designed piece of any era. I love the dynamics of contrast when a clear lucite table is paired with a Louis XVI side chair. And that same table is equally as comfortable and effective in a minimalist modern home. These are timeless pieces that have survived and flourished for 70 years and will be a good investment for years to come.

That was the long way of getting to my point which is to share with you a great resource for some wonderful mid-century pieces. I recently found JQ mid-century modern ATL at the monthly Scott's Flea Market after exhausting ALL of my local resources in search of a dining table for our new Toronto apartment. What we found was a mecca of Heywood-Wakefield pieces. Dining tables with gorgeous delicately curved legs and arm chairs with whimsical dog bone backs. I had found my soul mate in JQ. He wasn't a guy just out to make a buck. Instead he's someone with a real passion and appreciation for well designed pieces. He spends innumerable hours searching for great additions to his collection and his selection reflects that time and appreciation.

Vodka and Communism Make for Great Design Partners at Pravda Vodka Bar

My new adventure in Toronto has already unveiled a bushel and a peck of eye popping design in fashion and interiors. If I haven't said it enough, let me just reiterate my thoughts on great design. Great design does NOT always manifest itself in perfection. It's in the personal details that tell the story of you in courageous sassy style.

I've already been to nearly a dozen restaurants since we've been here. Quite a few were high end, super chic, uber shiny contemporary spaces. The kind you can see in any big city in the world. The kind that wants to be cutting edge but just doesn't have the courage to blow it out with audacious attitude and Philippe Starck style.

However, there have been a few very pleasant surprises. One of those surprises revealed itself in the form of a Russian vodka bar called Pravda Vodka Bar at pravdavodkabar.com. It's located in the charming old town area of Toronto. An unassuming front door opens into a space that is racy and luscious . . .and i'm not even referring to the Vodka yet!

Pravda is a celebration of Russian vodka in an environment that applauds the golden age of the Russian Empire. Portraits of Russian leaders and vintage propoganda hang above red and gold oversized upholstered furnishings against the original exposed break walls of the bazillion-year-old building (that's one zero more than a billion and one less than a gazillion). A bust of Lenin holds a place of honor and banners with portraits of former leaders suspended from the ceiling lead you thru the bar area. Elaborate crystal chandeliers share space with images of the Communist Hammer and Sickle making the space seem glamorous and somewhat creepy at the same time.

Don't go gettin all democratic on me now. This is all in fun. It's a living breathing experience that pays homage to the creators of vodka. You won't be charged a nickel for toilet tissue or questioned in a concrete room with nothing but a light bulb swinging above your

head. What you will find is one of the best selections of vodka (70+ on the menu) and martinis, amazing service, good music, and fun in a provocative venue that will leave you talking.

Dazzle 'em with Style: Holiday Gifts that Sizzle

I pride myself in being uber-organized when it comes to Christmas shopping. My mother was a shopping Nazi and I fully intend to follow in her footsteps, taking it a step further by breaking her record of completing all holiday shopping long before most people have even begun the task . . . for the most years running. By the time Black Friday rolls around, when everyone else is setting their alarms for 3:00 a.m. to race to the mall for a healthy dose of holiday fist fighting, I'm snuggled up in my fluffy down comforter with one fuzzy dog sharing my pillow and another curled up under my arm. I tumble out of bed around 8:00, make a pot of hot coffee, read the paper and look forward to my afternoon nap.

This year while I was wracking my brain for ideas, I was pleasantly surprised by an email from www.switchmodern.com, a supplier of interior design furnishings and accessories for the imaginative mind. But what to my wondering eyes should appear but a plethora of clever and affordable accessories that would be perfect for filling my holiday gift bags!

For the wine lover, I found these whimsical Anna G. Corkscrews in 5 colors by designer Alessandro Mendini. These are far too clever to be hidden in a drawer and I love the retro colors. Leather and felt Cameo Wine Carriers by designers Holger Graff and Daniel Lantz come in 4 colors and turn your wine bottle into a fashionable accessory. And the Chiringuito Wine Cooler bucket by designer Ron Arad comes in 3 colors and is made of thermoplastic resin so it can be recycled again and again.

And what do you give the cigar afficionado in your life? Well, a Gorilla Ashtray by designer David Weeks of course! This is definitely something the poker crowd will be talking about and they come in 3 colors and styles.

How about an environmentally friendly carved wood flashlight made of new growth beechwood and sporting an energy efficient LED light by designer Jonas Damon? Or a rubber silicone encased AM/FM radio in 6 colors by designer Marc Berthier?

Festive Decor on a Dime . . . and with a Smile!

November already. No kidding. I'm already mentally preparing for the agonizing prospect of climbing to the attic on my wobbly wooden ladder to "gleefully" schlep box after box after box of holiday decor back down the increasingly unstable ladder for the joy of organizing my thoughts for this year's holiday decorating scheme.

Surprisingly my attitude toward this task changes for the better once i fold up the ladder, open up that first box and see an Elf-on-the-Shelf staring eerily

upward. He's been trapped in that musty attic for 10 months with a cranky Yukon Cornelius and a prima donna of a treetop Angel and is ready to see his new digs for the next few weeks. This is when the fun begins.

Now, I've spent 25 years collecting my holiday decor and I try to add a little something every year to continue to build the dream. But this year we have more than our share of expenses so I've been looking for inexpensive ways to add some festive elements on a budget and thought I'd share my thoughts.

Cambria Cove has a great selection of really unique holiday cards that are just too pretty to send to everyone else and not keep some for yourself. An inexpensive gold or silver frame turns these cards into pieces of art for your home. Displayed acros

s your fireplace mantel or even at table settings, this is an interesting and inexpensive way to add a little glamour.

The Mu seum of Modern Art Store also has an intriguing collection of three dimensional cards that can stand on their own without frames and the intricate designs are definite conversation pieces.

I loved this pop-up tabletop holiday tree made of holographic foil that stands 12" high and costs $19.75. It folds up for easy storage and has a matching centerpiece for $23.35.

I always use candles at the holidays and it can be a really inexpensive way to add something dramatic to a room. But too often we fall into the trap of buying prefab candles in a glass with someone's name on it. We use the candle and then throw away the glass container . . . . because why do we want a glass jar with someone else's name on it anyway? Cambria Cove has this really stunning set of glass tumblers by New Arcadia with gorgeous 22k gold

hand-drawn designs. These would be fabulous containers for small votive candles scattered across a fireplace mantel or as a table centerpiece.

Now, 22k gold and hand drawn design means that these are a bit more pricey at $75 for a set of 4. But keep your eyes out at Crate and Barrel, Target and Z Gallerie. All three of these retailers will pull out the stops when they introduce their 2009 holiday entertaining items.

If you really want to get creative on a shoestring budget, display a collection of floating tea light candles in brandy snifters. For a little more pizzazz use a little food coloring to tint the water to match your decor color palette. Just remember that candles are always more dramatic in groups.

So, there's where I am so far but the season is young so stay tuned for more decorative items for your budget and some great affordable gift items!

Outdoor Furniture . . . In October?!? A Definitive "YES"!

Yeah, yeah . . . . I know . . .it's October. Most of us are overcome with that brief hit of nostalgia we experience at the beginning of every year's autumn, and we're already dreading winter's ensuing anguish. The last thing on your "to do" list is getting your outdoor living space spruced up for spring. You have plenty of time to deal with that next year, right? Sure you do, but this is the time of year when vendors introduce innovation and hot new trends in outdoor products so it's the perfect time for you to get ahead of the crowd!

At a recent trade show I came across a variety of styles, finishes and price points to satisfy any budget or design preference.

One of my favorites is a company called Fermob. Funny name . . . . . . great collection. Their products are environmentally friendly and all tables, chairs, benches come in 24 colors. This aluminum bench has a modern organic shape and is perfect outdoors year round. This is a definite statement piece but it's surprisingly comfortable as well.

The French cafe look is Fermob's forte. This particular cafe chair (right) is folding for easy storage and comes with or without arms again in 24 fresh color options. Stacking chair styles are also available

And if you want something that's a bit more of a lounger, Fermob offers a lower chair with arms (left) that is built for comfort and will also stack for easy winter storage.

So, yeah, you might have winter to deal with before you get the bug to freshen up your outdoor gliving space, but if you're like me, you'll put it off until spring is upon you and you'll find yourself frantically grabbing what's left on the shelves to make do. So, start doing your homework now so you can avoid getting stuck with the remnants in May!

Creating At-Home Learning Environments

The most important goal when creating a study area for a child of any age is in providing a nurturing environment that encourages a sense of security within your child. Far too often I see parents skimp on a child’s room while putting all their interior design budget into the spaces within the home that are most visible to guests. Furnishings, lighting and color work in concert to guide your child into the appropriate mindset for studying and should be given top priority in your home.

FURNISHINGS

A child’s room should have a particular area within that is designated for study and is not used for playing games, surfing the web, or instant messaging their friends. A desk is imperative and must have a non-glare surface that will reduce reflectance from light sources within the room. Opt for plastic laminates, matte finish metals and plastics, and wood surfaces with low gloss finishes.

The desktop must be large enough to accommodate a computer as well as space to spread out books, papers and necessary supplies. An L-shaped desk that can be placed in the corner is the optimal design if it can be adapted to the child’s room. The L-shape gives the child plenty of room to spread out and swivel between the two surface areas with ease.

When laying out the furniture plan of the space, keep in mind that the desk should be placed facing a wall, or in a corner when using an l-shaped desk, to minimize visual distractions from around the room.

At the end of a study period, children should be encouraged to clean off the desktop and organize study materials. A desktop with a pile of papers and books chaotically strewn across it will actually discourage a child from sitting down to take on the task of studying.

Consider ergonomic desk seating that will adapt to your child’s body size and the activities being performed. The chair should be adjustable to allow room for growth. Take your child with you when shopping for a desk chair so that he or she can sit in the chair. Adjust the seat height, arm height, and pitch of the seat back and let your child tell you if it is a comfortable fit. Take some time to shop your resources. In the past these ergonomic task chairs have been utilitarian in their appearance but the market has opened up and now parents have the option of both function and aesthetics.

LIGHTING

Lighting can affect physical conditions within the body that can either enhance or destroy a child’s ability to concentrate. Inappropriate lighting can cause eyestrain, tension, headaches and irritability. Natural daylight is the most important light source but is not always readily available in the appropriate levels. Therefore, we rely on artificial sources to supplement our lighting needs.

While science tells us that natural daylight provides vitamins and is necessary to our health, our daylight source in an interior space is usually limited to what comes in through a window and that can often result in glare if not managed properly. In a study environment, a window treatment must be provided on all windows to diffuse the light levels and the potential glare. Adjustable treatments like panel-style drapes or blinds allow you the flexibility of closing the treatment to diffuse the light when necessary and open it on those occasions when you need more illumination.

Artificial light sources include ambient, accent and task styles of lighting and all three work together to create a lighting plan that is conducive to study. Ambient light is the general illumination that softens the contrast between brightly lighted task areas and the surrounding areas. It allows you to see clearly all visible surfaces of the room without straining the eye. Ambient sources include general ceiling light fixtures, recessed incandescent lights and wall sconces. It is highly suggested that all major ambient light sources be dimmable to enable the flexibility required to create adequate, appropriate lighting scenarios. Accent lighting is usually in the form of a directional light fixture that spotlights a particular element in a room – an architectural element or artwork – and reduces monotony and glare by providing subtle highs and lows on surfaces. Task lighting is the beam that shines directly on a work surface, making all tasks easy to see. The simplest form of task lighting for your child’s study area is a desk light with an adjustable neck so that the beam can be adjusted as needed.

COLOR

Color is perhaps the most important element, and yet, often the most underrated. Numerous scientific studies have determined that the color of walls and ceilings have the power to either relax, thereby enhancing a child’s ability to focus, or to escalate anxiety and irritability causing your child to drift away from the task at hand. This particular topic can’t possibly be summed up in a few sentences, but there are some bullet points that can help in selecting an appropriate color scheme.

- A dreary impersonal environment actually encourages irritability and fidgeting in children as a compensatory reaction to the lack of visual pleasure. A white rooms cause eyestrain and anxiety while browns, grays and black are perceived negatively by children of almost all ages as a wall color. However, adding wall colors for the sake of adding color is an exercise in futility and the assumption that bright primary colors are conducive to a child’s ability to learn is far from the mark.

- In general a child’s positive or negative reaction to color is based more on age and his or her development toward adulthood. However, a child’s color preference is not always conducive to study and growth and parents should consider wall colors that encourage concentration, learning and nurturing at each age group

- Breaking up the wall colors is one of the most effective ways to avoid the eye tension experienced in a monotonous room. Painting the front wall – the desk-facing wall – one color in a palette shown to encourage a child’s concentration will draw attention and focus in the direction of that wall, defining it as the learning center. Break up the visual monotony by painting side and back walls a color that is a subtle contrast to the front wall.

- Children in Kindergarten through Elementary School perform best when surrounded by soft, warm colors that will actually compliment a child’s naturally tendency as an extrovert. Light salmon, soft, warm yellow, corals, and peach on the desk-facing wall will have a calming affect, reducing tension, irritability and anxiety, thereby enhancing the child’s ability to concentrate on a task. Side and back walls can be painted a soft, cooler hue.

- Older children and secondary school students are more comfortable working in rooms with a more mature color palette in subtle, cool hues. The facing wall is most effective when painted soft-to-medium tones of blues, greens and blue-greens. Acceptable colors for side and back walls for students in this age group include soft beige, sandstone and light tan.

While the topic of designing study spaces to bolster a child’s educational growth is complex and multi-faceted, it is one that deserves careful consideration and priority. Have you seen enough of the sea foam blue and brown color scheme that quite literally saturated the marketplace? If so, you’re far from alone. What started as a fresh, inventive color combination that designers could sell to only the most avant-garde clients eventually became another droll interior style that could be seen in most homes in most subdivisions in most cities. How does this happen? How did your fashionable home become dated and passé in such a short period of time? Why do you see your expensive new trend-setting living room in every mail order catalog? How could your designer sell you on a trend that was fast on its way out? Well, the answer may be closer than you think.

Interior designers are paid to stay ahead of color trends and set the direction of those trends. Unfortunately when introducing innovative, unexpected color combinations to clients for the first time, the designer often has a tough sell. The typical mailbox in America is inundated with Z Gallerie, Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware catalogs and homeowners assume that they’re seeing the latest trends in the pages of these sacred mail order publications. Interior design has packed up and moved outside this year. People are cooking at home more often and looking toward alternative means of entertainment. The result is that the outdoor living space has become the hottest new trend in today’s market with endless new options in furnishings, finishes and amenities.

Customization is key when planning an outdoor living space. You’ll want to create an environment that is comfortable, inviting and geared toward your personal needs. Consider alternatives to traditional finishes. Gone are the days of the bare bones pressure-treated wood deck. Reclaimed Douglas fir flooring and reclaimed ceiling beams add a touch of interior detailing that will draw attention.

The table cloth is an acrylic fiber with water and U.V. resistant characteristics. The cloth will not only repel water, it is designed to retain its color and resist mildew and rot for up to 5 years. THE SKINNY ON WINDOW TREATMENTS

Don't think you're alone if you've been in your home for 3 years and still haven't addressed the window treatments. It's a bit overwhelming to look at a house full of naked windows and instinctively know what to do with them. A great window treatments is an expense that will give you the most bang for your buck!! And yet, the windows are most often neglected, leaving a home feeling unfinished and incomplete.

One mistake most homeowners make is to throw up some wood blinds and assume they've solved the problem. Sure, you've taken care of privacy concerns. But not only have you not fully resolved the issue, you've added another hard surface in a space where you probably want to feel comfortable, warm and inviting. A fabric window treatment will soften the hard surfaces and corners in a room and can serve to make the room more cozy, elegant, dramatic or inviting depending on the style and fabric selection. If you're skeptical of this statement, I suggest trying it in one room just for fun. I promise that you'll see and feel an enormous and positive difference.

Another mistake is to run out and buy some prefab window treatments that don’t fit the window or compliment the style of the window & furnishings. It seems like such an easy, inexpensive means of dressing up the windows doesn't it? Trust me, I've done it and I know most of you have tried it at some point, and the results are seldom what we've hoped. Here's the problem. Windows come in all shapes and sizes and our needs for covering them are different room to room. Prefab window treatments and the hardware required to hang them properly are usually offered in a couple of sizes and we then try to adapt those options to fit our needs. The end result is a treatment that is too long, too short, to narrow, or even an inappropriate style to meet our needs. If you're like me, you'll live with your decision for a while, but in the end you'll find yourself trying to find a more appropriate treatment . . . . and the cycle continues.

Before you jump in with both feet and make this mistake again, contact a reputable professional designer. A professional designer can evaluate the window style and size to design a treatment that will provide the desired effect. A designer can provide fabric options, hardware style options, and professional installation services to ensure that the length, width and proportions of your draperies are appropriate and fabricated correctly. I strongly advise clients to have a reasonable budget in mind when contacting your designer so that he or she is well informed as the design and selection process begins. And don’t feel pressure to attack the whole house at once. Start with one room. You’ll be astonished at the transformation and you'll spend your money once and wisely.

And finally, there’s mother of all window mistakes – leaving a window undressed to avoid blocking a view. Window treatments are not meant to block a view UNLESS you specifically need them to do so. While a window treatment can be a functional element when a homeowner needs to diffuse the sunlight or provide privacy, they are imperative in complimenting and reinforcing the interior design of a space. As I mentioned earlier, a window treatment will soften the hard edges of the window that, when left untreated, make a room feel cold, uninviting and unfinished and they can cover or reveal as much of the window and view as one desires.

Many homeowners balk at the expense of window treatments if they aren’t planning on staying in a house long term because so often they feel they have to leave the treatments behind when they move. Well, that rule went out with wearing white after Labor Day. There is no hard and fast rule that says you can't take your window treatments with you. A good designer can often find a way to adapt a window treatment to a new window by redefining the style or adding fabric or trim accents. And if all else fails, the fabric can be reworked into decorative pillows, seat covers, placemats or table cloth.

Whether you need to freshen up your home for resale or revitalize your existing surroundings there are numerous cost-effective ways to get a new look for a new year. Over the next few weeks I'll be addressing some of these techniques starting with painting and rearranging your furniture plan and following up with tips on window treatments, artwork consultations and much more.

While all of these techniques can be accomplished on your own, I always advise people to hire a designer even for these simple projects. Too often homeowners put time, money and energy into fluffing their homes on their own only to find that the end result is unsatisfactory. To get the desired result, let a designer lead you through the process so that you spend your money once and you spend it well. Most designers also have relationships with skilled contractors and can coordinate projects for you so that you can go about your daily life.

- A New Palette for a New Perspective

Paint is the easiest way to change the personality of a room whether you are staying in the home or getting it ready to sell down the road. Paint will also have the most immediate visual effect. A new wall color can work wonders when integrated correctly with the style and colors of surrounding furnishings. But don’t overlook doors and trim, especially at eye level. Doors and door trim are the first surfaces to show age and grime due to daily repeated use.

A relatively inexpensive investment, hiring a designer to help select your wall/trim color palette and appropriate paint finish can reduce frustration and save money in the end. Designers work daily with a broader palette than the average homeowner and may have a fresh suggestion that you would never have considered on your own. Many people don’t realize the scientific element involved in the selection of color. It has been proven that color elicits a very physical response in the people who are living, working, and learning within a space. For instance, we all associate pink with soothing, sweet rooms for little girls. Did you know that studies show that a pink room will instantly relax the person who enters the space? Unfortunately in 30 minutes, the person becomes irritable, fidgety and anxious in that same pink space?

Let a professional evaluate ways to make your space more functional and aesthetically pleasing through the appropriate use of color.

- Rearrange to Revitalize

Rearranging furniture, accessories or artwork can create a whole new dynamic, traffic pattern and lifestyle. When preparing to rearrange, first take a good look at the way your family uses a particular space. Do you spend your time watching tv in a relaxed setting? Do you need extra space for children to play or do crafts? Or do you use the space for more formal entertainment? Often you'll find that living spaces must serve a multitude of functions.

Notice the direction and placement of light fixtures and glare from windows. A television screen that takes a direct hit from sunlight will be ineffective and can cause eye strain and irritability. Relaxing in your favorite club chair will be somewhat less enjoyable if light fixtures shoot a beam of light directly into your eyes. And an evening with a good novel is fruitless without appropriate task lighting.

Pay close attention to walkways and make sure you have plenty of space for movement around tables and seating elements. Furniture placement should enhance rather than hinder your lifestyle.

Let's face it. Most people don’t have the time, energy or vision to know how to best plan the placement of furniture elements within a room. It can be trial and error and it’s not always easy to move large pieces of furniture several times until you find the placement that works for your lifestyle. Done incorrectly a room can feel crowded, chaotic, messy or cold.

Hiring a professional designer in this instance is another cost effective method of achieving the end result that will work best for you. A designer will take measurements of your room and furnishings and sit down with paper and pencil and sketch out options until the desired result is achieved. Your designer works closely with bonded, insured warehouse personnel and can arrange to have your furnishings placed according to an approved layout and it’s done right the first time!

If you are considering putting your house on the market, this is a great route to take. Competition’s tough and you need to present your home in it’s most attractive light.

Believe it or not, the 2008 holiday season will be a memory before we know it and we'll be dismantling our decorations for another year!! Thanks to everyone who's been following along and I hope some of you have found some great tips to add some sparkle to your season.

Hope you'll join me in 2009 when I'll be dishing about some really exciting topics! My first series will address some cost-effective ideas for refreshing your home after the holiday decor disappears and will be appropriate for those of you who may be looking to fluff your home for resale or those who just want a renewed look to your existing decor.

I'll follow that up with a series on color that will change the way you see your home, work and learning environments. Ever wonder why certain spaces make you feel cold, irritable, relaxed or exhilarated? Color elicits a proven physiological response in each of us and when used correctly we can create optimal environments to enhance our needs and moods. Used incorrectly it can have a very negative effect on our attitudes and mental health.

Holiday Decorating Trends - Vintage Modern Elegance

My favorite holiday interiors are those that conjure up the magic of childhood. We’ve all fallen victim to the latest trends in holiday decor that are yesterday’s news by the end of the season, only to start again next season making the same mistake. I find vintage Christmas ornaments and decorations a timeless way to transport a space back to simpler times.

Antique and flea markets are the best place to start your treasure hunt. Don’t begin your voyage in search of perfection or you’re sure to be disappointed. And don’t feel pressed to buy a truckload of items to complete your look the first season. Take the time to browse around and see what’s out there. Pay attention to the colors, the handcrafted elements, and more importantly the charm and personality. You’ll soon find yourself being drawn in to the magic and can begin collecting the items that strike a personal chord.

I’m fond of the vintage Christmas “elf on the shelf”, small foil Christmas trees and retro Coca Cola stuffed Santa dolls. My best find to date is a 1950’s sign that blinks “Merry Christmas” in colored Christmas lights and marks the entry to my living room holiday experience. So much of my holiday joy is in sharing the delight I see on my friends’ faces when they unexpectedly encounter that decorative element that elicits their own treasured childhood memory.

While we all love the traditional symbols of the season, there is no reason to limit your color scheme to red bows, green garland and gold ornaments. The holidays are a celebration and a time to express yourself. I still love my big fir Christmas tree but I add sparkle in unexpected places by sprinkling small brightly colored foil trees throughout the house. A tabletop silver foil tree with brightly colored ornaments is a wonderful unexpected twist and a fuchsia or aqua bow on your traditional wreath will have the neighbors talking.

Fabric makes the most dramatic tree skirt and can show your unique personality and style. I love texture so fake fir fabrics in mink or leopard prints are a great way to add something lush and sophisticated. Tulle fabric is another elegant alternative and can be found in an array of wonderful colors to express your “glam” side.

Turning your dining room into a holiday celebration is easily accomplished by using things you have around the house year-round. I like to start by bringing out my antique linen tablecloth and draping it across the dining room table as an elegant canvas. Create a centerpiece by arranging a collection of wine decanters or silver pitchers and set place settings using charger plates in bright metallic or high gloss colors. Dust off your favorite wine or martini glasses and polish a few pieces of your grandmother’s silverware for a little sparkle. A colorful glass ornament on each plate and your dining room table is transformed into a festive holiday setting.

With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, the daunting task of holiday decorating looms around the corner, threatening to transform the gaiety of the season into something more reminiscent of a Friday afternoon conference call . . . . . . the day before vacation. The job can be especially frustrating in small spaces where the results often fall short on cheer and long on chaotic. Fortunately a few simple techniques can guide you in forming a game plan that will help you find the right balance between festive and functional.

First and foremost, I suggest using a monochromatic color scheme in your interior decor. In simple terms, that means using various shades of the same color throughout to create a consistency in your decor and a flow through the space. Too many colors introduced in a small space will appear cluttered. Adding a sprinkling of metallics in gold, silver or even copper tones will highlight your color scheme without adding confusion. For a really elegant look, try using only gold and silver decor and spicing it up with hints of white.

Transform your kitchen or dining room table from sensible to sensational. An exquisite table setting can add pizazz without sacrificing function. Set the stage with a crisp linen table cloth in a neutral shade and everything on it will "pop". Create your centerpiece with a collection of wine decanters and perhaps a bottle of wine. Add place settings with your favorite decorative dinner plates, wine or martini glasses, and silverware. I love to use my mother's antique depression glass dinner plates on high-gloss metallic charger plates with linen napkins and decorative napkin rings. Top off your plates with a beautiful decorative holiday ornament and your table is not only stunning, it's ready for holiday entertaining.

Forego the 8' fir Christmas tree and add a little sparkle with small tabletop foil trees. They are small enough to use almost anywhere, ranging in size from 10" to 3 1/2 feet tall, and are available in a multitude of colors to compliment any decorative color scheme.

Introduce clear holiday lights but do so sparingly and in focal areas where you want to highlight a vignette or architectural element - across a fireplace mantel or intertwined around a collection of tabletop foil Christmas trees.

Adding a luxurious throw or changing out decorative pillows on your sofa for the season is a simple modification that packs a significant decorative punch. Don't go for the embroidered Santa or or felt reindeer. Instead, look for lush, decorative fabrics, textures and detail - faux firs, silks, and ornate trims. Check out your local fabric stores. Some of the more sumptuous faux fir fabrics can be purchased by the yard for pennies on the dollar compared to the pre-made throws you'll find in your local retail gift store.

Replace your cocktail table books with a spread of vintage holiday record albums or old holiday children's books. Tabletop plate stands are another great way to display albums and books for optimal viewing. Either way, these classic items have such wonderful nostalgic artwork and are certain to strike a chord with holiday guests.

This year, avoid the media blitz with its high dose of sensory overload and cling to the old adage "less is more" as your mantra for seasonal decorating. Make a plan for your home, keeping it simple, personal and appropriate to the functional needs of your family.
